washcloths

I'm watching an episode of The Wonder Years, S3E4: Blockbusting. In it, Kim tells Dean, "I've heard things are...different at white people's houses. ::whispering:: You know they don't use washcloths in the shower?"

This is the second TV show I've watched recently where Black people have made references to white people not using washcloths.

In the first show, Atlanta (S3E1: Three Slaps), a white couple tell their Black foster kid that they don't use washcloths; that he should just use his hands to wash himself with. When the boy replies, "Even for my butt?", they shrug it off. The white couple were acting weird in other ways (this part of the episode was based on a true story, which I didn't find out till afterwards), so I thought that was just one more weird thing about them. I didn't realize there's a common belief that white people don't use washcloths.

Looking up the topic, it seems the belief may even be true!

Reddit: Does your country use washcloths for washing during a shower?

As for me, I always use a washcloth in the shower, but only for my cleaning my butt and my vulva (I use two different quadrants of the cloth for each.) Afterwards I lather up more soap on the washcloth to get it clean, rinse it, wring the water out, and hang it to dry for the next day. I reuse it for several days, usually until I do laundry.

For washing the rest of my body, I use soap and my hands.

Now, I'm not particularly interested how people wash their overall bodies - whether they use their hands or a washcloth, a sponge, real loofahs, or those mesh pouf/puff/scrunchy things, and whether they use soap, shower gel, or nothing.

But I am really curious about this: How do these people who don't use a washcloth wash their anus and vulvas?
Do they touch their anus with their fingers to wash it, with or without soap?
Do they rub it with a bar of soap, not touching it with their hands?
Do they not touch it with anything at all; do they rely solely on the stream of shower water to clean it?
Do they use a bidet and because of that not feel a need to wash it when in the shower?
Do they use a sponge/loofah/mesh puff to wash it? (The thought of that is almost as outlandish to me as the idea of using my fingers, but would be less surprising.) If so, do they use the same sponge/loofah/mesh pouf for washing the rest of their body too?

I'm probably missing other possible answers. I'll probably get few replies, but want to at least put the question out there. I'll make an anonymous poll question in case anyone doesn't want to reply in the comments.

What do you use to wash your anus and/or vulva, if you don't use a washcloth for it?

Update:
I found this Reddit thread. It is so long that it seems to be never-ending (I haven't reached the end yet), but it is very enlightening!
Do normal people wash between the butt cheeks when showering

From the many comments on that thread, each of the possible answers I listed is what some people do. However, washing it using only one's hands and soap seems to be quite common.

dry skin by nails

This is one thing I didn't expect as part of aging and/or menopause. The skin on the edges of my finger and toe nails is dryer and harder than it used to be. It's annoying and distracting. I cut off what bits I can with a nail clipper and use glass nail files on the rest. But even with special narrow-pointed cuticle files, it is hard to get at just the dry skin while avoiding collateral damage to my nails.

Has anyone else been getting a particular style of ad on YouTube lately, which shows animations of various parts of the human body? These ads tend to have a voice-over that sounds computer-generated with a British accent.

This latest one includes text "Let this sweet mineral melt in your mouth to rebuild your gums and teeth", with an animated video of a face with a tongue stuck out and a glob of red stuff on it, with the tongue moving left and right.

If so, do you find these animations disgusting? I do. It makes me want to close the ad as quickly as possible, which usually means closing the browser tab and not continuing to browse other videos as I might have otherwise done.

This time instead of closing the tab, I paused the ad in order to write this. Now I've played more of the ad to get more details. It went on to show a real non-animated photo of a person's mouth with white foam on the teeth and something red like blood at the bottom.

This is the first time I've had the ad open long enough to notice what company it is for. I won't link to it but: Body followed by bliss followed by today, with dot com.
I've taken a look at the website, and it seems quite dodgy to me. It does not have any "sweet mineral" for sale, only a few books and mention of "members-only" content which can be purchased.

Now the ad is showing a sideways view of a real open mouth but with the upper part of the jaw animated to be moving up and down in an unnatural way (equally horrific to me) while an off-white rectangular thing floats into the mouth.

I didn't watch the rest.

This was a relatively benign example of the type of ad. Other ads have shown internal bodily organs like the stomach or colon, with the organ bloated and pulsing larger and smaller, or wiggling around or something like that.

These all make me cringe with revulsion. I am curious if other viewers have this same visceral reaction, as I don't imagine ads can work well if they make the viewer want to close the window as quickly as possible before even hearing what the ad is for.

Edited to add:
I got that ad again, or one very similar to it. This time however it linked to a different website, latest followed by dash and stuff and dot com.

I selected the "i" info link in the lower left corner of the video, which brings up YouTube info on the ad. That provided an option to not show the ad again. I selected that, but considering the same dang ad must be getting shown from different advertising accounts, it may not help much. Also, you don't get to prevent all ads from the same account, only the particular ad you select.

I remember looking for an option like that, to stop a particular ad from playing, in the past. Back then I didn't find any. So I wonder if the option is new, or only shown on certain ads. Or maybe only when you are signed into YouTube or Google.

I'm eligible for the 2nd COVID-19 booster shot, but have debated getting it now versus waiting a month or two. From what I've read, for people without risk factors, there's no urgency in getting it, and there may be benefits to waiting. (In case there's another big surge several months from now, or in case they come out with new boosters/vaccines based on the latest variants.)

In my area, the current case/hospitalization rates are very low, as low as they were in the very early days of the pandemic.

In two articles, I read something like the following, which I was curious about:

How Long Does It Take for the COVID Booster to Be Effective? (2021/12/21)
There's one other factor that can impact the effectiveness of a booster: time between doses. According to Penaloza-MacMaster, the longer the interval between your original vaccine series and the booster dose, the better antibodies your memory cells can create.

Why would the memory cells work better with a longer interval? So I tried to find an answer (I don't believe I did), and more info on these memory cells...

What to know about booster shots and third doses of the COVID-19 vaccine (2021/12/22)
COVID-19 vaccines create high levels of antibodies that can block the virus from ever infecting our cells. As time passes after your vaccination, however, you also develop memory B cells and T cell immunity and antibody levels go down. With fewer blocking antibodies, the virus might be able to start an infection. As viruses evolve, strains that can bypass those antibodies have an advantage and some people have such a high-level exposure that it can overwhelm the antibodies they do have. When this happens, we call it a “breakthrough infection,” but memory B cells and T cells are able to respond quickly and stop the infection before too much damage is done.

Breakthroughs, Boosters, and B cells … Oh My! (2021/10/12)
Over time, as the infection resolves and these antibodies fail to find virus, they will diminish in number. However, what doesn’t go away are the cells that can produce antibodies against the infecting virus. They are called memory B cells. We also have memory T cells that remain after an infection. If we are exposed to the same virus again, those B and T cells will recognize it and become activated.

The memory B cells will change into another type of B cell, called a plasma cell, and quickly start producing large quantities of antibodies. The antibodies produced by these cells are significantly more effective at stopping the virus than antibodies produced during the first encounter with a virus.

Activated memory T cells will cause the production of chemicals critical to our immune response, called cytokines.

This page has a nice simple chart:
Viral Attack: Memory Cells
Toward the end of each battle to stop an infection, some T-cells and B-cells turn into Memory T-cells and Memory B-cells. As you would expect from their names, these cells remember the virus or bacteria they just fought. These cells live in the body for a long time, even after all the viruses from the first infection have been destroyed. They stay in the ready-mode to quickly recognize and attack any returning viruses or bacteria.

Quickly making lots of antibodies can stop an infection in its tracks. The first time your body fights a virus, it can take up to 15 days to make enough antibodies to get rid of it. With the help of Memory B-cells, the second time your body sees that virus, it can do the same in thing 5 days. It also makes 100 times more antibodies than it did the first time. The faster your body makes antibodies, the quicker the virus can be destroyed. With the help of Memory B-cells, you might get rid of it before you even feel sick. This is called gaining immunity.

B cell memory: understanding COVID-19 (2021/02/09)
If the amount of Abs [antibodies] in circulation drops, or if the pathogen varies from the initial infection, the shield may not be protective, and a re-run of the response would be required. This response, triggered by re-exposure to the same or a closely related pathogen, uses the memory B and T cells, incorporating the information acquired in the first response by starting with cells that have already been selected as being strongly reactive. This head start makes memory responses faster, larger, and of higher affinity than the initial response, allowing for rapid negation of the pathogen, often before symptoms develop.
...
Within GCs [germinal centers], B cells rapidly proliferate and, remarkably, deliberately mutate the DNA encoding the epitope-binding component of their antigen-binding receptor, potentially changing its affinity. This occurs as repeated cycles of proliferation, mutation, and selective survival of those B cells with improved binding affinity to antigen. This “selection of the fittest” continues for the duration of the response or until antigen receptor binding strength reaches a maximum, meaning that B cell affinity is improving as the response progresses.

Why are T cells called T cells
T cells (thymus cells) and B cells (bone marrow- or bursa-derived cells) are the major cellular components of the adaptive immune response.

I wasn't even familiar with this organ of the human body:
Thymus
The thymus is located in the upper front part of the chest, ... behind the sternum, and in front of the heart. It is made up of two lobes

Update, 2022/05/29:
Here's another article that mentions memory B and T cells benefitting from delaying the booster, if you've recently had a COVID infection:

Is a second COVID-19 booster right for me?
“An infection acts as a kind of ‘immune boost,’” Ferullo explains, “Getting a booster shot too soon thereafter runs the risk of interrupting and restarting an immune-building process that the infection began,” he explains. “The longer those memory B and T cells have to mature, the better equipped they will be to fight a new infection, so it makes sense to delay a booster for a few months after recovery.”

Nasal Cycle

I never heard about this before!

Why don't we breathe equally out of both nostrils?
during the nasal cycle one nostril becomes congested and thus contributes less to airflow, while the other becomes decongested. On average, the congestion pattern switches about every 2 hours

Nasal Cycle
Turbinates consist of bony projections covered by erectile tissue, much like the tissues of the penis and clitoris. The turbinates in one fossa fill up with blood while the opposite turbinates decongest by shunting blood away. This cycle, which is controlled by the autonomic nervous system, has a mean duration of two and a half hours but varies widely with age, body-posture, and other conditions.

Some years back I took to always sleeping with my mouth open (ie. breathing through my mouth) because one or both of my nostrils so often get congested when I lie down to sleep. I dreaded not getting enough air and struggling to breathe while I was oblivious to it, asleep. I also didn't want to have those kinds of dreams where I'm trying to do something simple but it's a very hard struggle, which I suspect are likely due to those times when I'm having trouble breathing.

I accidentally bumped my foot against the side of a mirror as I was hurrying to the kitchen, and ended up with a small gash in my toe, and blood dripping all over the kitchen floor. It seemed at first that it wasn't going to stop bleeding, even with me pressing against the cut with paper towels. But after about 20 minutes, it had slowed down enough for me to clean it and put a bandage on.

If such a small cut can bleed that much, I wonder how doctors deal with really big cuts... how they get those to stop bleeding. Just bigger bandages, I guess.

.

I was thinking today about old bodies versus young ones... about an old person's cells versus a young person's cells. How are they different? They must be different, otherwise the old person wouldn't seem aged. No dry wrinkly flabbly skin, no gray hairs... but how are they different? Cells regenerate in old people too, don't they? Do certain cells just stop working, and don't regenerate new working versions anymore, when one gets old?

Some parts of aging might not be the cells, but the other stuff in one's body... accumulated toxins... plaque in the arteries...

And then I was thinking about how a forty-year old man and a forty-year old woman can have a baby, and the baby's body is brand new, not forty years old. Two old bodies producing a new, young body. How is that possible? What is so special about the egg and sperm cells, that they produce a new young body, as opposed to another old body? And if 2 old bodies can produce a new young body like that, why can't they regenerate their own bodies with young cells, to avoid all the unpleasant side-effects of aging?

And then I was thinking about that sheep they had cloned, and wondering how exactly they had done the cloning, because I don't remember the details.

And I was thinking about how women in the future who hadn't found any compatible male partners to have a family with, might decide to have a child-clone of themselves; no-one else's genes involved. Men would have a harder problem doing the same, as they would need to find some female willing to carry the clone-baby to term, and give birth to it, unless they come up with a way of developing babies in the future without the whole pregnancy part.

Forestfen just brought up the issue again of me not liking having breasts, and how I *should* like having my breasts be noticeable, because breasts are pretty and breasts are pleasurable, and men this and women that... and during this I ended up exclaiming, "I am not a woman, and I am not a man; I am an androgyne!" hehehehe...

She had me repeat the word because she didn't recognize it, and then she repeated it a couple of times to herself, as if intrigued. Before continuing on about how people's bodies are nice, and how they should like them, etc., to which I just respond, "Uh-huh... uh-huh... uh-huh...".

.

Ever since I turned on boot-logging a few days ago, by adding "/bootlog /sos" in my boot.ini file, I haven't had any problems with my startup. Oh well. Guess I'll just keep the bootlogging turned on then, since it seems to prevent the problem.

I have to keep that in mind,
because my mind is being nostalgically difficult.

errant curiosity

Why does "a piece of ass" refer to vaginal sexual intercourse? It sounds more like anal.

Is it really true that a hymen "may be broken due to vigorous exercise"? I do believe that some people may not have much of a hymen to begin with, and that hymens can break or get stretched from things like tampons or fingering. But from vigorous exercise??? What kind of exercise could cause something way down inside there to break? Mine never broke from exercise. It is hard to imagine.

Does "to eat a cherry" mean the same thing as "to pop a cherry", or does it mean cunnilingus?

I've not been wearing bras at home for a few years now, and have become comfortable with that. In February, I even stopped wearing them to work. On one cold day, I decided to wear one again, but it felt tight and uncomfortable on my ribcage. I haven't felt like repeating that experience again. I'll still wear them for jogging. And if I go anywhere just in a t-shirt or other thin shirt, I'll probably still feel uncomfortable being bra-less... that my breasts would be too noticeable. But otherwise, I don't feel the need anymore. I guess for me it was just a matter of getting used to it... used to the feeling of loose breasts... used to walking around like that without thinking that everyone will be noticing or paying attention to my breasts.

I often see people describe their orgasms in terms of "waves".. of sensation I guess, or pulsating muscle contractions, maybe... Yet mine don't feel that way. So I was wondering...
(and I've made the poll results viewable only to me, btw. At least I think I did.)
(So... apparently the poll results are viewable to anyone. But at least the names of who answered the poll aren't visible.)

I've got that heart-thumping can't sleep thing going on again. And it's cold. But at least I haven't gotten any menstrual cramps yet, in spite of having started bleeding.

Work: orbeon oxf ops xpath xpointer xupdate xquery xpl xforms eclipse servlets portlets jetspeed tomcat.... oy. and that's just the ones I can think of right now.
It seemed a bit disturbing to think that I've been going out to eat lunch by that pond for over ten years now. For more than ten years, if you happened to look there on almost any given non-rainy workday around noontime, there I would be...
The trees are ten years older now, even though they don't seem to look much different. I'm ten years older now, and I probably don't seem to look much different either, sitting there, eating, reading, sitting...

I'm considering using lotion on my face, which I've never done. My face seems to have suddenly aged this last year, growing wrinkles, startling me.

I heard Gary Jules' cover of Mad World this morning while driving to work. It's the first new song I've heard in a while which has touched my emotions... although it's an old song, really.

Yesterday was one of the times I didn't feel like crying on my way home from the Munch. And today, it sort of seems I should be sad about something... but I'm excited by it, instead. I've been sad about it enough already, what is there left to be sad about?

I feel alone, even though I'm perhaps less alone than I've been in the past. I feel empty because I remember feeling not-empty, but I'm forgetting the feeling, and I'm afraid of losing that wonderful memory... But I don't want to remember, because it was just a nice illusion, and painful, and it doesn't seem worth remembering. And it makes me not want to take comfort in any other illusions either, so my old fantasy alter-egos don't give me any comfort, and I feel alone.

I was imagining today, what it would be like if males and females were pretty much the same as they are now - physically, emotionally, and temperamentally - except for the females having the dicks and the males the wombs. Perhaps also with the males having slightly wider hips than they do now, for childbirth purposes. And it didn't seem very important in my imaginings, who had the breasts.

well, i've got a beard. stringy, sparse and nicely located just on the tip of my chin. it makes me feel somewhat genderfuckish. so, maybe ppl don't tend to think anything odd if females happen to wear "men's" shirts or pants, because who can really say that a particular item of clothing is only for males? but a beard on a female, now, that's unusual. maybe it'll make some ppl stop and think, or wonder. and maybe some of those ppl will think something other than just "Oh, how disgusting, that lady has a beard."

in a way, it's odd. all a female has to do to have a beard, is not to pluck those hairs out. at least, those females who tend to grow dark hairs on their chin, which doesn't seem to be such a minority of females either. considering that, i'd think one would see more females with chin-hair. maybe i just haven't been looking.

but i don't know. i suppose i'll pluck it out sooner or later. otherwise it'll keep growing longer, and how long would i want it?

and it's sort of amusing too. the only person who's mentioned anything about it to me is my mom. no one else has said anything. they probably wouldn't be able to think of anything suitably polite to say... "say, that's a nice beard you've got there!"

but i am a bit concerned that when i see wonderful-dom-dude, that he might decide to pluck it out himself, or pull on it, or tell me to cut it off... when i wrote my list of limits, i included no shaving or plucking of my arms, armpits, legs, or eyebrows, but i didn't say anything about my chin. *giggle*

if only they could have beamed that info into my brain while i was still sleeping. then i could have known to turn the alarm clock off and go back to sleep instead of getting up and ready for work...

is it normal for labia to swell like little balloons when aroused? is it normal for one of them to swell, and not the other?
