Trick or Treat

This is Halloween. Now that I've turned on some appropriately-genred radio, it feels a bit more like it.

I didn't buy treats to give out, nor decorate outside this year. I had a few reasons. I am still reminded of last year, putting up the decorations, and then Serena dying a few days before Halloween. So few kids even come in a normal year (last year 6 kids in 2 groups). It's in the middle of the week. The current hours I keep have me working till late at night. I have to get up early tomorrow morning.

Yet now I am procrastinating finishing my day's work, because I want Halloween to be more Halloween. Halloween is such an ephemeral holiday.

Earlier this month I applied an orange/purple/green color scheme to the tree of lights. It is in the other room.

Scrolling through the whole over-the-air FM radio dial, not any Halloween music, not even on "Steve FM". One PBS channel is playing what might be vaguely Halloween-themed music, but not of the chipper kind. I'm switching back to streaming.

Oh, it is also the start of Diwali. Happy Diwali! Happy Halloween!

August:
I took a week of vacation.
I watched the Peacemaker series on HBO Max, and enjoyed it. That show has the best title sequence / music.

September:
I got a new phone.
I drove to Myrtle Beach with my mom, for a half-vacation half-work week.

October:
I visited an Arts & Music festival and browsed the art.

I went to the SC Pride Festival and got to see a performance by Sheila E.. A nice thing about these public outdoor events here is how close up you can get to the stage and performers, if you want, compared to a concert with assigned seating.

I got my flu shot and bivalent Covid booster on the same day, one in each arm.

Wyze treasure hunt! It affected me, oddly, remotely. I wish I had time to describe the feels.

Halloween: I put up decorations and lights. I replaced the net fabric from my ghosties with a different fabric less likely to entrap flying insects. The new fabric is thicker and heavier, so I cut it into strips to make it look better. Turned out quite well; I was very pleased. I gave out treats. There were 13 trick-or-treaters.

November:
I early-voted the Friday before; stood in line for an hour. But I was relieved to get it done with.

I spent Halloween at Qiao's house. The lights I put up on his porch look truly awesome. Long purple and orange icicles on the sides, and 2 regular strands, purple and green along the front. Also, two short battery-operated strands with blinking purple and orange LEDs on the mailbox.

To begin with, I was undecided whether to give out candy from the door, or to do a self-serve table like last year. I ended up putting the treats on a table on the porch, with a baggie (paper sandwich bag) filled with these treats for each kid:

- a packet of Halloween Veggie chips
- a packet of Halloween mini pretzels
- 2 packets of strawberry twizzlers
- 2 peanut chews
- an orange caramel filled dark chocolate (horsemen of the apocalypse chocolates, courtesy of Qiao)
- a sticker

(Nowadays I only buy and give out candy which I won't mind eating up myself if there are a lot of leftovers. Now that I'm working from home permanently, I can't even give away leftover candy at work.)

About 16 kids came: a big group of about 9 first, before I really expected anyone. I had been fiddling with a radio at the time, and they were already rushing away when I belatedly noticed. I yelled after them to make sure they had all gotten treats, and a boy yelled back that they had.
Over the next couple hours I got a few kids at a time, along with parents et. al.
A group of 3 came while I was out on the porch, so I handed them the treats. The others I spoke to through the glass door.

My mom stopped by, wearing a mask.

8 days away from Election Day, and I find there's nothing for me to vote on this year. The city is having a mayoral election - I've been getting emails about that one. But as I live outside the city limits, I don't get to vote for the mayor. That disappoints me, but at least now I don't have to spend time looking up info on the candidates; one item removed from my to-do list.

For those of you who do have local elections to vote in, this is a reminder! Next Tuesday (after Halloween) is Election Day.

.

I've got pretty Halloween lights on the porches. I plan to give out treats or set up a grab-n-go treats table like last year (not sure which yet), for anyone who might come. I'm putting some Halloween cards in the mail tomorrow.

I had an idea. Small paper cups. Candy could be put in small paper cups, set out on a table near the street.

The weather forecast is clear. The moon is full. Halloween is on a *Saturday*. It's perfect, except for that matter of a world-wide pandemic going on.

Mom has a pumpkin and reportedly has lost her pumpkin-carving volunteer. I could carve the pumpkin and put it by the treats.

Even if no one stops to get any treats, jack-o-lantern would still be doing its thing, filling the evening with Halloween Spirit. I wouldn't need to feel like I've been feeling, that I'm copping out on Halloween.

.

Then again... Having a table full of untouched, unwanted cups of treats out in full view of everyone driving by all evening... the ignominy of it all... at least when the untouched treats are inside, you're not putting yourself all out there... maybe it would make the jack-o-lantern sad, not to have anyone even stop... who am I, to put a poor jack-o-lantern through such an ordeal...

oh dang!

I already broke the tongs!

They are the metal kind with a spring in the end, but they were closed up with no obvious way to open them*. So I pulled on the ends, applying force, and got them to open a small amount (which would have been good enough). But then I decided that having them open further would be better, so I pulled harder, and the rivet holding it together broke!

I don't know if the label had instructions, but I don't think so. When I got to the checkout counter yesterday (right before the store closing time), the tongs were missing the label with the bar code and price. It was just a small square of cardboard clipped on with a plastic thread, so it might have fallen off somewhere, or maybe it was missing to begin with. I walked back very quickly to get another tong for the cashier to scan, and told her she could give me the one without the label.

I specifically chose those tongs as they were the only ones without plastic or rubber on them. I don't want plastic as it could get scratched up, and wouldn't be good in case I wanted to use the tongs for pulling something out of flames. I don't want rubber as rubber things tend to get sticky as they age around here, due to the humidity.

(That's another thing I wanted to gripe about. Aloe gel-based hand sanitizers leave my hands sticky even after rubbing them a long time. Even after they start feeling dry, they become sticky again when I touch something like my car's steering wheel. And god forbid it rains and I touch something wet - the residue on my hands turns to slime.)

.

It looks like it's about to rain too, and I haven't even showered yet. Not conducive for baggie-buying.
What to do, what to do?!

*Based on one of the online reviews, the tongs have a locking device on the end: "pull up for closing and push down for open"
Damn, so that is how it works. Would have been good to know. I should be able to fix them if I can find something to replace the rivet with, and if I can get the spring to stay in place while trying to re-assemble it.

I'm still uncertain what to do about Halloween.
I bought 2 bags of candy just in case, and a pair of tongs because that will be handy for other things too (salad!). Target still had a lot of candy and costumes available. But no orange holiday light strands.

It really wouldn't be much trouble to set up a portable table by the gate, with individual baggies of candy for kids to grab. Could even have one at Qiao's place, and one at mine, and even one at my mom's as it sounds like she's going to have a jack-o-lantern. (But we don't have that many portable tables...)

But I'm still not sure it's worth it with the uncertainty if there will be any trick-or-treaters at all this year. Although with an unmanned table out front, maybe random people with kids (or even without) driving by would be more likely to stop and get something than in normal years?

But then I'd need to go shopping again to get some small baggies. I didn't want to be wasteful yesterday, buying plastic baggies that I wasn't sure I'd use. I don't think people would be comfortable picking up paper bags where they couldn't see what was inside, and I don't think they make ones that small anyway. Are there any ecologically-friendly see-through baggies? Hum, something like these cute paper sandwich bags might work.

[ another idea: small paper cups would work too ]

It all wouldn't work well if it ended up raining or sprinkling that evening.
It would really be a great year not to do anything. But then my ghosties wouldn't even get to come out of the closet.

What to do, what to do?

lift

Today I found out that Batteries+Bulbs takes button batteries, in addition to other batteries, for recycling.

.

I went to Big Lots, expecting there to still to be Halloween decorations & lights available. It's still two weeks away, after all. Instead, they had Christmas stuff. I got a blue LED light strand.

While I was browsing one side of the store, I kept smelling weed even through my face mask. No one was nearby that I could see. I wondered if someone was smoking it in the back of the store, or if someone smelled so strongly of it that it lingered after they'd walked by.

Shopping really gives me a lift sometimes, finding things that look tasty&vegan&organic, or pretty&useful, or just-what-I-needed-or-wanted. I don't get that lift with known brands that I've had before, unless they are something really good and on sale for a great price. It's mostly with items that are new to me, unknowns, surprises. Big Lots is good for that, because I never know what I might find there.

.

I suppose it's best not to give someone else in your household a food or drink you like a lot. It's a repeated anguish seeing it there, unopened, every time you open the refrigerator. You can't have it, because you gave it to *them* as a gift. I need to remind my niece about that bottle of Mama Chia Blackberry Hibiscus, cuz if she don't want it, I *will* drink it.

.

Last week while I was working with the windows open, I kept hearing an unfamiliar whining/buzzing noise. I finally looked outside. It was a flying drone! Up over the area across the street where the erstwhile strip mall is. V-shaped, black, with white on the tips of the wings. It must have had propellers, but was too far away to see them. At one point it went up very high, and made me worry. No planes in the area, but still. What if it lost control and fell?

Come to think of it, I think there's a county sheriff's station in that strip mall now. I wonder if it was law enforcement testing out a new gadget, rather than some random person having fun.

I never had those Zotz fizzy candies before this Halloween, and had never seen them in stores. I found them on Amazon while ordering the Peanut Chews. They seemed vegan based on their ingredient list, so I decided to give them a try. I'm not fond of hard candy, but they taste ok, and the fizziness is nifty.

As I always have so much candy left over after Halloween, I take it to work and leave it on the counter in the coffee area, over a period of 2 or 3 days. Last year and this year, it surprised me each time, at how fast the candy would disappear. I'd put it on the counter, and then when I'd walk by a few hours later, all sign of it was gone. Not only the candies, but even the bag it had been in. I can't figure out if many people are eating it until it's gone, or if someone takes the whole bag.

This morning, I saw that someone else had already put a big ziplock bag of candy on the counter. It was full of Zotz candies! I wonder if they ordered it from Amazon too, or where they got it from. I put my bag next to theirs. 3 or 4 hours later I walked by, and both were gone.

A storm blew through at 6:30pm, just as it was getting dark outside. But the rain lasted under 10 minutes.

9 kids come by trick-or-treating, in 3 groups, plus my mom, niece and grand-niece.

I gave out the following candy:
Candy bracelets, Goldenberg's dark chocolate Peanut Chews, ZotZ fizzy candies, Swedish Fish, Sour Patch Kids, mini Bottlecaps and SweetTarts, Nerds (grape and strawberry), Laffy Taffy (banana & strawberry).
Also a sticker of a festive llama for each kid, and some My Little Pony stickers for those who wanted them.

Happy Halloween!

The last few days were muggy and damp. Today it cleared up somewhat and got windy, enough for the ghosties on the porch to sway and the pinwheel to twirly twirl twirl. I had created a new support for it to be able to hang it from a hook, and it worked even better than expected.

The little dog, Serena, pulled a trick overnight, tearing apart a trashbag I'd inadvisably left on the kitchen floor last night rather than taking it out to the bin right away. It was all caught on video. She started on it less than two minutes after I turned the lights off to go to bed.

Heavy thunderstorms are forecast for 6 to 8pm.

The candy is ready, come what may.

I'm trying to get my work hours in for the day, but having a slow time of it. Cleaning up trash. Distractions. Headache.

I wanted to post a Halloween song video, but the song I thought of (Mad World) ends up having nothing to do with Halloween. Too much headache to think of another right now. Took Tylenol 2 hours ago but it's not helping yet.

Had a strong temptation to give the dogs a bath, but can't take the time for that as I need to work. Finally convinced myself they don't need the bath today.

...
Edited to add (4:54pm):

Oh gosh, I should have raked the driveway and walkway. What if someone comes and slips on the pine needles? But no, I need to work. And anyway, it would feel embarrassing doing that now, making it look like I'm expecting trick-or-treaters when it's likely to storm. Even if anyone does come, they're more likely to cut straight across the grass than to go along the walkway.

If you have Halloween lights lit on your porch, do you still need to leave the porch light on to indicate you're giving out candy? Or do the Halloween lights suffice? (I'd have thought they would suffice, but Q always says the porch light should be on too. In which case I'd need to screw the bulb back in).

...
Edited to add (5:59pm):
Because of comments on this page, I screwed the porch light back in. It's a yellow bug light so at least it's sort of decorative looking.

Oh yay. Tornado Warning in this area now, per my cell phone. "Take shelter now." Oh yay yay. Earlier today it was only an alert, not a warning.

Hmm. If the power goes out, the Halloween lights will go out too.

I still have at least 3 hours of work to work. You can do it, you can do it!

My mom was supposed to take my niece and grandniece out somewhere for Halloween today. But I haven't heard from them yet.

...is "Scattered Thunderstorms" with an icon of cloud, lightning, and rain, all the way from 11am thru midnight.

But the "Precipitation" is listed only as 41% to 51% for each hour, and each hour's amount as 0.01 inch, which sounds like at most a few sprinkles to me.

If it actually rains, I doubt we'll get any trick-or-treaters at all, as in good weather we only get a dozen or two.

Tuesday and Wednesday have a heavier rain forecast. So I won't hang the ghosties up in the yard on the trees like last year; don't want them to get soaked. Maybe I'll find a place for them under the porch. Maybe I'll put up a few more hooks.

.

A few stores around here used to sell Goldenberg's Peanut Chews, which are dark-chocolate covered chewy peanut candy bars. They even came in mini bite-sized versions, good for giving out on Halloween. They didn't contain milk, but I was never sure if they were truly vegan as they listed "glycerine" as an ingredient. I haven't seen them for sale in a long time, so I checked online.
According to this forum post, they are actually vegan.
So I ordered some this year, to give out.

Nineteen. Nineteen trick-or-treaters! Mwah, ha, ha, ha! ::in my best Sesame Street voice::

Had
One
A group of about Ten
One
Two
Two
One
Two

Or something like that. May have missed counting a few.
Not including the parents and/or chaperones.

Buying candy for Halloween is sort of like having a party, but not being sure if anyone will come.

Such an anachronism.

Nineteen! (Now I've got that Vietnam war song in my head.)

One thing I hadn't considered is that the netting I used to make the ghosts can be a hazard to flying insects. I rescued a beetle that I noticed seemed stuck between the layers of netting.

This page has a great "prove you're human / not a spammer" test thingy at the bottom, although I fear it may be too difficult or confusing for some people, especially if they're from someplace without much public transportation. But maybe that's on purpose, as they only want locals to post comments.

https://ggwash.org/view/65334/topic-of-the-week-what-does-trick-or-treating-look-like-in-your-building-or-neighborhood

The question, and sometimes the map, changes each time you reload the page.
Even I'm not certain about some things (one question mentioned the "full time" yellow line; not sure what that means, or how one can see that on the map).

ghosts

I've put up the Halloween lights, and now I'm making some ghosts to hang from a tree in the front yard. I've done ghosts like this once before, about a decade ago. I have a nice small mesh white net-like fabric. But I don't remember how I did the heads last time. I'm pretty sure i didn't use anything fancy like foam balls, nor balloons. The best I've come up with so far today is to ball up a white plastic bag, and then drape the netting over it a few times until the plastic is obscured. But I have a nagging feeling that the last time I had some other better approach. I wonder if I simply balled up the net fabric itself.

Oh, and I decided it's not too early to start eating Halloween candy.

I'm doing Halloween at Q's house this year. I have no idea if this area gets more kids than mine, or maybe even less. So I might have a lot of candy left over anyway. Maybe no one will come. Or maybe I'll run out of candy early. The eternal dilemma. I'll have to remember to bring over my boxes of snack bars, etc., just in case.
